Product Notes

I came of age in the back of a Dodge Caravan while my family shuttled from Arizona to New Mexico to Mississippi, and grew louder at church potlucks and homeschool (then later public school) classrooms. I put down rather satisfied roots in the retirement neighborhood of Starkville, MS, about a mile and a half from the jail where Johnny Cash famously stayed the night, where I lived for 10 years. My father was the choir director for Faith Baptist Church in Starkville, and he was the one that first introduced me to fundamentals like Bob Dylan and the Beatles and the ever important Blood,Sweat and Tears. In the June of 2002, we sat on the couch in the living room and listened to Slow Train Coming front to back. When there was a chore I didn't really care to do, I would ask him to explain exactly why Al Kooper was so cool. He used to arrange Christmas carols in five-part harmony for the family to perform for our neighbors and the employees of our local Movie Gallery. I picked up the guitar in 1996 because i wanted to live out the movie That Thing You Do (except not on the drums) and because I had fallen deeply in love with The Wallflowers' Bringing Down the Horse. My mother had more complicated tastes, but when she fell in love with Wilco's 'I'm the Man Who Loves You,' I knew there was a God and He was good. Before she passed away, I took her and my baby sister to see Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, and it was the night of my life. I nursed a terminal long-distance relationship with a gorgeous Romanian girl from a suburb of Los Angeles for 3 years out of habit (or maybe just because I wanted to write more sadsack material), but I knew that I really must be barking up the wrong tree when she said she owned about 9 Celine Dion albums. She was pretty in all the saddest ways, and I think I wanted to fix her, but all the sad songs I'd written about us were already true. Damn, she was pretty. I do manual labor for bill-paying money and work retail for beer-buying money, but truthfully I'm a cheap date and usually get sleepy by beer #4. There's a lot of good Gospel to be known, and I intend to dig it out and serve it up for willing ears.
